Wrapping up summer 2012...

Happy Labour Day! The September long-weekend signals to many the end of summer and beginning of school. It occurred to me recently that this fall is the first time since 1989 that I haven't been heading back to class - feels a little strange! But before we hurry into fall here are a few random highlights from August...

My little brother is married! Pearl and Andrew Buhler - August 11, 2012
A Stitched Blessing for Andrew and Pearl on the occasion of their wedding.

This was my first try at applique - turned out pretty well I think.

The gift of a beautiful orchid from friends.

Exquisite!

Bountiful harvest!

Carrie's parents delivered the farmer's market right to our kitchen the other day.

A handful of the many fresh beans we've been enjoying this summer.

Aren't those mini red peppers cute?

Wacky potatoes!
Canned some zucchini relish and raspberry jam - yum!
Very cost effective wall art, pictured here with our NEW couch.
Carrie's been having fun with origami lately.
One of the many things we have more time for now, post-seminary.

This summer Carrie has been receiving invitations to preach at various Mennonite churches in Winnipeg and surrounding area, and has also (much to our surprise) made a foray into youth ministry with one week of youth camp down and one weekend youth retreat to go.
Working on a diagram for the youth retreat that Carrie's speaking at next weekend.
For the most part, August has been relaxing. My work at Mediation Services was quiet during the summer but has begun to pick up speed now as we near fall. I will be serving as a volunteer counsellor at CMU  again this year and expect that that will start in a few weeks, once students are back into the swing of things there. And finally, this past month I decided to put myself out there as a minister with this new creation, www.aliciabuhler.com - check it out!

July highlights...

Even with a relatively relaxed pace these days it's hard to believe July is almost over! Here are some highlights: I started the month by attending the Evangelical Mennonite Conference annual convention at Providence College/Seminary and saw many familiar faces that I hadn't seen in years. It was good to reconnect with the EMC post-seminary. Approximately every-other weekend Carrie and I spend the weekend at her parents' farm near Altona. It's necessary for my mental, emotional and physical health to get out of the city during the summer and dig in the dirt! I've also been on a run of really good books lately. Thus far my summer reading list has included: Evolving in Monkey Town by Rachel Held Evans, Things Seen and Unseen by Nora Galligher, Almost Amish by Nancy Sleeth, Still by Lauren Winner, and A Woman Called by Sara Barton. Here are some additional highlights with photos...

Now this is how it's done...

My parents gifted me with a hammock from Paraguay for my seminary graduation last year and with few trees in the yard but plenty of space in our basement suite I decided to enjoy my hammock indoors. I hung it in our living room between two door joists. Imagine Carrie's surprise when she came home one day to find a hammock in our living room! I spend many evenings relaxing, reading, and over the next several weeks watching the Olympics from my hammock.

Renewing a Tradition

Prior to moving to Elkhart Carrie and I had a tradition of celebrating my birthday at Ballet in the Park. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet offers a free performance in the park every year near the end of July. I love the casual feel with everyone gathering on the grass in front of the stage to take in the 2 hour show.

Not a fabulous picture, but you get the idea. This year we arrived an hour early so that we'd get a good seat and enjoyed a picnic supper of steak salad, fresh blueberries, kettle chips and sparkling raspberry beverage.

My birthday cake. Another delicious creation by Carrie: rich citrus cheesecake with an almond crust and fresh raspberry topping. Who needs grains anyway? SO GOOD!

Can't Beat the Commute!

I have just under a 10km commute to and from work each day. When I first started at Mediation Services in winter I took Winnipeg Transit to work but now that it's summer I'm taking advantage of the beautiful weather and saving myself some dollars by cycling as much as possible. There's a great cycling culture in Winnipeg and every year in June they hold a Bike to Work Day, which I have now participated in twice. This year they have over 4000 participants who registered for the event and next year they're planning for Bike to Work Week. Having approximately 40 minutes (depending on the wind, which is a major factor in commute time on the prairies!) of uninterrupted time in nature is my consolation for no longer working outside all day, every day in the summer as I have for the past three summers. I've really lucked out with my route too, as you can see:

Hitting the open road at 7:30am on Ol' Faithful (my bike)

Part of the Trans Canada Trail

Path in the Assiniboine Forest

Past my alma mater

Through the Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine River

Path along the river

Across the river on the railway bridge that's been converted to a bike/foot bridge

Omand's Creek Park

Wolseley, one of the bike-friendliest neighbourhoods in Winnipeg where you'll see signs posted, reminding cyclists that vehicle traffic has the right to use the road too!

And suddenly I'm at work on one of the busiest streets in Winnipeg - thankfully I don't need to bike in that traffic at all

So that's July. The highlight of August will be my brother's wedding which is two weeks from today. I'm so looking forward to Andrew and Pearl's big day!

Prairie sunset...

One evening a few weeks ago I just felt like going outside and taking pictures of the sunset and so I did. This is what developed. Enjoy!

Life of late...

I realize that it's been a while since I've posted an update on here! The last month has been full with my parents visiting for a week, my sister, brother-in-law and nephew here for another week, a trip to Indiana at the beginning of June, and a couple of weekends helping out at the Martens farm. This weekend it feels like I'm finally catching up here at home! Life is good. Work is going well and I'm so grateful to have full-time employment. In terms of ministry opportunities I have a few things on the horizon but for the most part feel very comfortable right now with this being a period of watching and waiting to see where I may be called. I was invited to present in a class at CMU a couple of weeks ago which was being taught by one of my former AMBS professors and it felt so good to dive back into the world of pastoral care for a couple of hours one afternoon. I continue editing for that same professor and we are moving toward the final stages of completing the book I've been assisting with on-and-off for the past two years. Summer is officially here now and I have been enjoying being able to bike the 10km to work on a path that takes me by the Assiniboine forest, through Assiniboine park, and along the river - I couldn't have asked for a better route! Carrie and I have been taking Tai Chi classes on Saturday mornings which has been a fun learning experience - we have our last class this week. Plans for summer include getting outside to do some yard work on the Martens farm as time allows, surviving the building renovation at work, and seeing my baby brother get married in August. I'm looking forward to what will hopefully be a quiet and relaxing summer. Here are some pictures from my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew's visit. We took one evening to go out to Steinbach to hang out with my brother and sister-in-law to be. Love hanging out with my siblings!

Paws in Motion 2012...

Today we walked in the Winnipeg Humane Society's annual Paws in Motion fundraiser, in memory of Cathleen, our sister, aunt and friend. Cathleen was most certainly an animal lover and I think she would have loved that we chose to support WHS in her honour. She is pictured below with one of her babies, 'Mieka'.

Peyton requested a "black boxer" balloon animal.

Hundreds of people and pets took part in the 3km walk at Assiniboine Park.

We made it!

And to top it off, Curt and Oscar were picked out of the crowd to win a prize for dog/owner look-alike!
