Weekend courses are good in theory but...

Well, I'm heading to my weekend class in about an hour. Weekend courses - I didn't understand the groans last semester when people spoke of weekend courses but I think I'm beginning to understand. It's the end of the week. All you want is a Friday night off and a Saturday morning to sleep in. But guess what, from 6:30-9:30 Friday evening you're in class. Then you go home and crash, get up at the break of dawn the next morning to sit in class from 8:30-3:45. Last semester this didn't sound all that bad to me, after all, it's only one weekend per month. Now that I'm living it though, I'm beginning to understand. The other aspect of weekend courses is the homework - we all seem to forget to do it! The week leading up to the course people are frantically reading and writing, having put off a month's worth of work to fit into just a few days. I usually start of the week following the weekend course promising that I won't do that again, but without the consistent reminders that you usually get from the simple act of attending class weekly, it just slips my mind.

The saving grace of this weekend course is that I absolutely love the class itself - Mission and Peace with Alan Kreider. I feel privileged to be there, given that this is the last time he is teaching it. I heard many people talk about how this is one of the most transformative classes at AMBS so I went into the courses excited, yet a little skeptical as to not build it up too much for myself. What I have discovered, though, is that it is completely transformative. It's so fascinating to see a group of seminary students, including myself, get so excited about mission (stop right now, you'll need to put aside any preconceived notions of the word mission because this is totally different). We're talking about the missio Dei - the mission of God. We're getting a fresh, though not altogether new, perspective. To see what I mean, go to:

This is an article written by my professor which catches a glimpse of what we're talking about this weekend. Hey, if I have to be in class this weekend, you might as well learn something too!
