College Mennonite Church - Goshen, IN
After 3 long years it was graduation day at last!
Check out the sleeves on that master's gown. Fun fact: our gowns were made out of 100% recycled pop bottles - 23 bottles per gown.
I was very excited that my "little" brother came down for the occasion - any excuse for a road trip.
My parents, on their third (and most likely final) trip to Indiana. At this point they had spent 2.5 weeks traveling all over the US, first attending my brother-in-law's seminary graduation (he received his MA in theology) in California and then mine. Who would have ever thought that we'd have two seminary graduations in the family in two weeks!
My family, minus my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew.
Me, with Carrie's parents
Carrie, with her parents
Rev. Heidi Neumark, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Manhattan and author of Breathing Space, was our commencement speaker
AMBS president Sara Wenger Shenk and dean Rebecca Slough
Conferral of the Master of Divinity degrees - an exciting yet sobering moment
Having a laugh with the dean because she mispronounced my name. During the grad rehearsal she said it perfectly and I told her, "Good job on the pronunciation!" which I think made her nervous during the actual service. When I shook her hand she said, "You shouldn't have said anything yesterday about pronouncing your name!"
Receiving my empty diploma folder from the president - I won't receive my diploma until December when I've finished my final practicum requirement
Carrie, in her signature crocs, having her moment with the president
Carrie and I were both honoured and humbled to receive academic awards at the dean's breakfast this past weekend. Carrie received the Church and Ministry department's award for excellence demonstrated in the area of Christian Faith Formation with exceptional work in Children's Faith Formation, and I the award for excellence demonstrated in the area of Pastoral Care and Counseling with exceptional work in spiritual care and chaplaincy.
Now these two roommates are ready for the next chapter! This summer I will be working on summer crew one last time (Putting my degree to good use - Hoooray!) and Carrie will be completing an independent study as well as preparing for fall, when she will co-teach a course here at the seminary. Come fall, Carrie will be teaching as well as working (volunteering) at our church in the area of Christian formation. I will be completing my final AMBS practicum at Elkhart General as an on-call chaplain and oncology counselor. In addition, I will be interning at a retreat centre in Goshen and work on my Gestalt Pastoral Care practicum.
